Murray Edwards College

Murray Edwards College, formerly New Hall, was founded in 1954 as the third foundation for women at the University of Cambridge. It began in a borrowed building with just 16 students and no endowment, but grew to become a full college in 1972. The College moved into iconic modernist buildings designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, the architects of the Barbican.

In 1999, a significant endowment from alumna Ros Smith and her husband Steve Edwards secured its future, leading to its renaming in 2008 to honour its founding president, Rosemary Murray, and the donors. The College is renowned for its commitment to women's education and wellbeing, offering a supportive and informal community. It houses Europe's largest collection of art by women, founded in 1986, and boasts 14 acres of informal gardens.

The College also operates as an external conferencing and events venue, The Cambridge Meeting Space, offering facilities for meetings, events, and summer schools. Murray Edwards College continues to champion gender equality and expand its outreach to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. It provides an academically excellent Cambridge education in a stimulating and supportive environment, empowering students to be confident and successful.

The College is open to visitors and offers free admission to its grounds, buildings, and art collection.
