Gravity system converted to a combi boiler

Sandhurst, Berkshire

This customer had two complaints about their gravity fed system. It took up storage space they wanted back, and it ran out of hot water. Rather than assume a like for like replacement was the answer, we went through the options with them first. A combi turned out to suit what they actually needed. It freed the storage space entirely, and the Worcester unit we fitted has the flow rates to keep hot water coming rather than giving up partway through a second shower. The same visit added a small area of underfloor heating to the extension, on its own independent control so that room can be run separately from the rest of the house. The customer was very happy with the upgrade, and the installation carries a ten year manufacturer warranty behind it.

Sam was building a rear extension with an open plan kitchen at the heart of it. That is the point at which underfloor heating is worth considering properly, because the floor is coming up anyway and the decision costs far less to make now than to retrofit later. The deciding factor was the finish he was after. Underfloor heating let us warm the whole area while keeping the floor at one level throughout, with no step or threshold where the extension met the existing house. It also gave him the walls back. An open plan space loses a surprising amount of usable wall to radiators, and in a kitchen that is worth more than it sounds. There is nothing at knee height for children to run into either. We worked alongside the other trades on site and to their programme, so the heating was never the thing holding the build up.
