About from company website

Mersey Heat is an Energy Services Company (ESCo) developing and operating a low-carbon heat network in Liverpool. Originally developed by Peel Natural Resources and Energy (NRE) and Ener-Vate, the network provides heat and hot water to developments including Liverpool Waters, Hartley Locks, and the Titanic Hotel. The system abstracts water from the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, using Water Source Heat Pumps (WSHP) to upgrade the temperature.

This innovative approach is projected to save approximately 4,200 tonnes of carbon annually, contributing to Liverpool's green initiatives. The district heating network is designed for scalability, with an Energy Centre built in a modular fashion to accommodate increasing demand. The 'open loop' system returns water to the canal/dock system after heat extraction.

Advanced heat pumps, supported by thermal stores and gas boilers for backup and peak demand, ensure a reliable supply. Mersey Heat partners with Vital Energi for the management and operation of the network, leveraging their extensive experience in district heating systems.
