Lewis Wind Power Holdings Ltd

Lewis Wind Power is the developer behind the proposed Stornoway Wind Farm, situated on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. This project aims to harness the significant wind resources of the area to deliver competitive, low-cost electricity to consumers across Great Britain. Beyond energy generation, the wind farm is designed to foster substantial economic growth within the islands, with an estimated creation of several hundred local jobs and an annual contribution of up to £33 million to the local economy.

The Stornoway Wind Farm project has evolved since its initial planning permission in 2012. A revised consent granted in January 2022 by the Scottish Government allows for increased turbine tip heights, up to 180m for some turbines and 156m for others, accommodating more modern and efficient wind turbine technology. This updated design features up to 33 turbines in total, a reduction from the earlier consent's maximum of 36 turbines.

The project is strategically located on land owned by the Stornoway Trust, a body representing the local community. Significant benefits are planned for the local community, including up to 20% community ownership of the wind farm and annual community benefit payments of £5,000 per MW, potentially reaching up to £1 million per annum. Lewis Wind Power is committed to a contracting strategy that prioritises the use of local suppliers and facilities during the construction phase.

The project will also involve rental payments to the Stornoway Trust for the land used.
