The Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE) is a pioneering infrastructure project in South Wales, dedicated to becoming Europe's premier site for rail innovation, testing, and certification. Established in 2021 with significant backing from the Welsh and UK Governments, GCRE aims to accelerate the development of new rolling stock, infrastructure, and technologies, driving the transition to a net-zero railway. The 700-hectare site will feature advanced testing facilities, including electrified test loops, alongside business incubation spaces and conference facilities.
GCRE's mission extends beyond technological advancement to encompass rebuilding local prosperity, making transport more sustainable, and regenerating a former coalfield area into an attractive destination. With a strategic vision to fill a gap in integrated rail testing and R&D, GCRE supports the industry by speeding up innovation and bringing new products to market faster. It also serves governments by enabling early testing of innovations to improve value for money and cost control on major projects, ultimately contributing to a stronger, greener, and more affordable rail network for future generations.
