For most of our projects in schools, the work has to revolve around times when pupils are not on the premises. This particular project was on a tight schedule over the summer holidays, as it was essential all the replacement LED lighting was in place and working before the staff returned prior to the new term. This was just one of many LED lighting installations we've done in schools and offices, and we normally also carry out the design work as part of the package.
While this was just one ward at this busy general hospital, it proved to be a large and complex project, with us being responsible not just for the electrics but also for the mechanical installation. It was the first time we had worked with the main contractor Robertson Construction, but now we are their preferred sub-contractor for all their high-specification projects, and to date, we have carried out almost £ 3m worth of work for them.
We'd already worked with Business Lodge on their original offices in Bury, and like many of the other clients we've worked for they decided to stick with us when they purchased a new site in Stoke-on-Trent. The dilapidated building they had taken on was to be turned into high-specification contemporary serviced offices, and we had to adapt a very poor installation to meet their needs. The work was carried out over three phases as they gradually became established in their new location, and although the project is now finished we still carry out small works and maintenance.
We've worked with many local authorities over the years, but this project, in conjunction with Equans Facilities Management, proved quite demanding. The task involved the completion of Electrical Condition Reports, but all work had to be carried out at weekends with everything returned to perfect working order for Monday morning.
Carrying out the complete electrical installation to the newly-built 6th Form Block and the refurbishment of the rest of the existing buildings proved a particularly demanding project for this local school, as it involved multiple design changes. As ever, our team rose to the challenge, working closely with Main Contractor Manchester & Cheshire Construction, and the result went so smoothly that we were honoured when they voted us one of their top sub-contractors in 2021!
Maintenance, repairs and new works on the Capesthorne Estate are managed through their Facilities Management team, Fisher German, a client we've worked closely with over many years. In fact, Capesthorne is just the latest property they've trusted to our care, and in total we've carried out electrical work on over 80 projects for them. They know the high standards we maintain and the quality of our installations, so they had no hesitation in choosing us for such a prestigious and high-profile venue.
On this project, we worked directly for the Health Trust and their Consultants DSSR, with SSG as a partner sub-contractor. It involved completely replacing the Fire Alarm System for a large and busy general hospital, while also maintaining the existing life safety systems while the new system was introduced. The scale and complexity of the project demanded the utmost cooperation and sensitivity from our team on-site. Naturally, they rose to the challenge, combining flexibility and tact with their technical knowledge and experience to make sure the work was right the first time, with the fire alarm working 100% from the start.
