About from company website

E P Rothwell & Sons Ltd is a privately owned company with over 24 years of trading experience, founded by Eamonn Rothwell. Initially established as a formwork sub-contractor, the company evolved to offer a comprehensive temporary works service by adapting and expanding its core skills. This allows them to manage complex projects that might otherwise span multiple trades, relieving pressure on main contractors.

The company prides itself on a core team of highly experienced, motivated, and responsible tradesmen who are equipped with the necessary skills and plant to commence work immediately. They are capable of handling a wide range of contracts, from the smallest to the largest, and are fully qualified to operate various access plant equipment. Their main yard is located near Slough, Berkshire, but their mobile workforce and strong relationships with equipment suppliers ensure they can operate effectively regardless of site location.

E P Rothwell & Sons Ltd offers a range of specialised services including structural propping for removing columns or supporting abnormal loads, facade retention to maintain the external appearance of buildings during redevelopment, needling to support upper floors during extensions, and basement shoring for excavations in confined spaces. They also undertake formwork and reinforced concrete works, providing a complete solution for temporary works requirements.

Conversion of an old tram shed in Bath into luxury apartments

Bath

The client had to completely remove the internal structure including the roof and replace it with a new frame, whilst leaving the external walls in position to maintain the appearance of a historically significant building. The site was on the side of a hill, overlooking the river and consisted of varying level floors throughout a building which had deteriorated over the years. All of the facades were to be restrained by walings strapped to the brickwork and supported by towers positioned either inside or outside to avoid the existing structure and still allow for the building of the new structure. Co-ordinated drawings were produced in association with the client, Architect and Engineer to ensure that all requirements were met. Foundations were installed within the building to carry the towers.

Demolition of conservatory and replacement with brick extension in North London

North London

During a large domestic refurbishment job, an existing conservatory was to be demolished and replaced with a permanent brick built extension. The existing division wall in the building were to be removed at the same time to leave a large unobstructed space. The existing structure had suspended timber floors but the conservatory had a concrete slab. Sleepers were laid under the floor where necessary and bedded to provide a sound foundation. Externally, props were set out to avoid drainage trenches and manholes.

The client had to remove a wall which lay directly in front of the new entrance and replace it with a smaller column positioned to minimise the obstruction. The wall carried a duct up through the building, which contained live services. The upper floors of the building remained in use, being occupied by a Law Practice. RMD Megashors were designed in conjunction with the Structural Engineer to carry the weight of the building down into the basement raft slab. Hydraulic flat jacks were to be used to minimise movement of the structure and to ensure correct load transfer at the end of the job. The new structural steel was designed as part of the temporary works, with the protruding sections to be removed at the end of the job.
